How to optimise your website for Google Lens

A growing share of the people searching for what you offer never type a word. They point a camera at something instead. A pair of trainers, a piece of furniture, a plant, a storefront, and let Google Lens work out what it is and where to find it. Google Lens now handles billions of visual searches every month, and for visual product categories in particular, it has quietly become a real discovery channel that most websites have done nothing to prepare for.

That gap is the opportunity. Visual search has clear best practices, and very few sites have actually implemented them. So if your images are working as hard as your words, you can capture traffic that your competitors are not even aware they are missing. Here is how to optimise your site for Google Lens.

What Google Lens actually does

Google Lens is Google’s visual search tool. It uses computer vision to identify what appears in an image, then matches it against Google’s index to return similar products, relevant information and places to buy or learn more. It is built into Google Search through the camera icon, into Google Photos, and across Android and iOS, and it forms part of Google’s wider move towards multimodal search, where text, voice and images all work together.

The important thing to understand is how it differs from traditional image SEO. Conventional image optimisation relies heavily on text signals, the words around and attached to an image. Lens leans much more on visual matching. It interprets shapes, textures, logos, colours and context, then cross-references that with text data to decide what your image shows and whether it is a good match for what someone is looking at. That means optimising for Lens is part visual and part technical, and you need to get both halves right.

Make your images visually clear

Because Lens depends on computer vision, the visual quality of your images matters more here than almost anywhere else in SEO. The system needs to be able to parse your image cleanly, so the goal is clarity and separation.

In practice that means a few things. Use high-resolution, sharp images where the subject is clearly the focus. Isolate that subject against a clean or neutral background, since clutter makes it much harder for Lens to work out what the main object actually is. Light it evenly to avoid heavy shadows that obscure shape and texture, and where it helps, photograph the subject from multiple angles so Lens has more to match against. Strong contrast between the subject and its surroundings consistently makes images easier for visual AI to categorise correctly.

For product images especially, this is the difference between being matched to a camera-based search and being passed over for a competitor whose photography is cleaner.

Get the technical foundations right

Visual clarity gets you into the game, but the technical signals are what confirm to Google what it is looking at.

Descriptive file names

If you are still uploading images as IMG_5923.jpg, you are throwing away a free signal. The file name is one of the ways Google verifies what its computer vision thinks it is seeing. If Lens believes it is looking at a red running shoe and your file is named red-running-shoe-nike-mens.jpg, that agreement reinforces the match. Name your files descriptively and use hyphens to separate words.

Detailed, specific alt text

Alt text is one of the highest-impact things you can get right for Lens. It gives Google an explicit text description to pair with the visual data. The key here is specificity. “Black hard-shell carry-on suitcase with adjustable handle” gives Lens far more to work with than “suitcase.” Describe what is actually there, keep it accurate, and resist the temptation to keyword stuff, which adds no value and is treated as spam. Modern formats and compression

Fast-loading images are not just good for users and Core Web Vitals, they support visual search performance too. Next-generation formats like WebP and AVIF deliver substantially smaller file sizes than JPEG or PNG without sacrificing the clarity that visual matching depends on. Compress your images properly and serve appropriately sized versions to different devices.

Structured data

Schema markup connects your images to the information that makes them useful in a visual search. Product schema links an image to its price, availability and review rating, so that when someone scans a similar item, your result can appear with details like an in-stock tag attached. For businesses with a physical presence, local business schema helps Google connect a photo of your premises to your maps listing. Build a consistent visual identity

This is a longer-term play that many sites overlook. Google increasingly recognises visual styles, not just individual images. When you use original, high-quality imagery with a consistent identity, the same colours, style and logo treatment across your site, you help Google learn to associate that visual language with your brand over time. Relying on generic stock images that hundreds of other sites also use works against this, because there is nothing distinctive for Google to attach to you.

Originality matters for a practical reason too. If your visuals look like a template that any competitor could be using, you give Lens no reason to single you out.

Don’t forget what happens after the match

Appearing in Lens results is only half the job. When someone arrives from a visual search, they are looking for more, whether that is a price, more information or a way to buy. If your image leads to a thin or contextless page, you will lose them.

So make sure the pages your images sit on are genuinely useful. Surround them with the content a visual searcher would want next: clear product information, reviews, related guides, tutorials or videos. A strong, relevant landing experience increases both the chance of a click and the chance it converts into something meaningful.

A channel most competitors are ignoring

Visual search has moved from novelty to habit faster than most SEO strategies have kept up with, which is precisely why it is worth your attention now. The work involved is not exotic. Clear photography, descriptive file names, specific alt text, modern formats, sensible schema and a consistent visual identity, most of which also improve your conventional image SEO and your site experience at the same time.

In other words, optimising for Google Lens is rarely wasted effort. It strengthens your visibility in image search and AI-driven results as well, and it positions you for a shift in how people search that is only going to grow.
